One of the most consistent questions that we get
from fans is "How do the dogs get home from Nome?"
Well here's how...
One of our sponsors, Alaska Central Express, is
the pre-eminent Rural Alaska air cargo carrier. They have a fleet
of prop-driven aircraft that enable them to handle just about
any size village runway. ACE provides an invaluable service to
Kami Kennels by flying dogs and gear home from Nome, and also
providing round trip freight to other races in remote areas of
Alaska.
ACE flies the dogs in the same large airline approved
plastic kennels that people use for their pets every day. These
pictures were actually taken while ACE was preparing to ship Ramy's
team to Bethel for the Kuskokwim 300 mid-distance race in January.

Just before flight time the dogs are loaded in to their kennels.
Over time Ramy has found that they travel better in pairs. He uses
extra large kennels for the small framed dogs, and they have less
anxiety than when they travel alone

Ramy's sled and other gear for the race is to the right. Notice
that the dogs kennels are facing each other as they wait to board
the flight.

Here is a good shot of the huge amount of stuff he is taking with
him just for 300 mile trip. Imagine how much more there is for the
1000 mile Iditarod.

In addition to the sled and dog food, Ramy packs food for himself
and fresh straw for the dogs to lay on.

The ramp crew is loading the sled and dogs into the aircraft.

The sled is moved into position.

These dogs are looking quite curious about this. Pretty Boy is
on the right - he's done enough of these trips that he gets frequent
flyer awards :-)
|

Just about done. Ramy's team and goods will be in Bethel in just
over an hour.
