"In-Sight" Denali Fenceworks
The hesitant voice, sounding far away at the other
end of the phone line, ventured, "Uh . . . You guys sell pigs?" This
is probably the most unusual question we have been asked here at the
Fenceworks. Answering the phone all day long is a part of daily operations,
but we usually get questions about - what else? - fence! The best part
is, we have answers! (By the way, we don't sell pigs.)
Denali Fenceworks has been in business since March
of 1984. For that first construction season, business was conducted
from the owner's home and yard and shop space was rented. A little way
into our second season of operation, we purchased the warehouse we rented
space in, renovated the office area and moved into what is now our present
location, and have been operating happily and successfully from here
ever since. We are a family business.
Owner Joe Vargas has been in fencing a little
over forty years now. His wife, Susan, helped get the company up and
running. Daughter, Delisa deVargas, who started out assisting with clerical
work and occasionally operating the jeep-mounted drill rig, has now
been the office manager for several years; 2001 marks her 18th season
with the company. Joe's nephew, Scott Colledge, is now in his second
season with us doing sales and estimating, and has been here in previous
seasons working in the field. Two of Scott's brothers have had a number
of seasons working for us as foremen in the shop and in the field, and
Joe's son and his other two daughters have all participated as well
in building the business along the way.
Our senior Foreman, Dale Bunker, though not a
relative, is an important part of our business family, having been with
us since our second year in operation and definitely a cornerstone of
our success. Nearly all of our employees have worked for us for more
than three seasons. Because of the long-term nature of our relationship
with our employees, we are able to efficiently produce work that is
consistently of excellent quality and workmanship. This benefits not
only the success of our operations, but also the satisfaction of our
customers - and that's what good business is all about!
The quality of our work is the essential element
in our relationship with the dog mushing community. The chain link dog
run panels which we construct on-site are far superior in strength and
durability to any pre-fabricated kennels which have been available in
the Fairbanks area. Our ability to customize the size and configuration
of the panels means that we can build to suit the needs of any mushing
operation, large or small. Our complete inventory of chain link fence
materials includes large quantities of galvanized steel pipe and tubing,
both new and used, which is often employed as tethering stakes. We have
donated a dog run to the Fairbanks ADMA Annual Symposium Auction since
1996, which has helped to increase our product exposure and reputation.
We are pleased to be able to support the adventurous people and their
courageous teams who bring dog mushing to the Interior, awakening our
connection to a statewide, nationwide and worldwide community of participants,
fans and sponsors in this exciting and inspiring sport.
